Introduction

In spite of the current advancement in medical science and technology, for most people, the understanding of the common aches and pains is still basically the same as in the yesteryear. For acute pain, "pull muscles", "joint sprain" and "disk protrusion" are usually diagnosed; for chronic pain, "minor injuries", "poor posture", "chronic strain", "degeneration", "pressure on nerve" and "psychological factors" are casually blamed to be the cause. These impressions may be the triggering factors or coexisted or coincident findings, but they are certainly not the real cause.
Paradigm shift1
Much similar to a computer system, human possesses two distinct components - the electromechanical "hardware" and the controlling "software".

The importance of software cannot be overemphasized. Software error does not only cause or mimic hardware malfunction, but it may also cause widespread unpredictable behavior of the system. When a system is not working properly, just check the hardware without paying attention to the software is deemed to be unwise.

The software of the human body is innate and is imprinted in the genome. However, it requires constant fine-tuning with continuous input signals in order for it to provide optimal control of the body. The quality of these signals determines how well the body functions; abnormal postural sensory information is found to be strongly related to poor posture, imbalance, strain and many different types of pain.
The basic cause
Man stands upright and maintains his balance by the continual coordinated contraction of muscles of the body. The derangement of this balancing mechanism causes abnormal muscle contraction and stress on the joints throughout the body. For further information, please read Cause of spinal problems.
Management
Restoration of the proper balancing mechanism is the most appropiate approach. Once the equilibrium is optimized, the posture will improve. The strain on the muscles and the stress on the joints will decrease globally. Thus, there is no reason to treat the areas of dyscomfort. More information in Upper cervical misalignment and Treatment.

The faulty equilibrium control does not only cause pain and postural problems, it also produces a wide range of seemingly unrelated symptoms. More on this at Signs and symptoms.

Paradigm shift is the term first used by Thomas Kuhn 1962 book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" to describe a change in basic assumptions within the ruling theory science.
